How many words is enough to compete in the regional and National Spelling Bee?

A beginning level competitor needs a foundation of about 10,000 words. To be successful at more competitive bees, this foundation should be expanded to approximately 30,000 words. There are over 400,000 words in Webster’s Third Dictionary, but many words have multiple forms.
