Spelling Bee Words That Help Make Champions

Hexco spelling bee products provide study lists of some of the hardest words for National Spelling Bee preparation. Spellers are able to learn a large number of words from our products quickly and efficiently, and Hexco has helped 33 consecutive bee champions master their words and win the National Spelling Bee. Our statistics over the years has shown this to be true! 

2021 National Spelling Bee

This marked the 22nd consecutive year of National Spelling Bee champs to use Hexco products. There were 302 off-list spelling words given compared to 710 off-list words in 2019 with the difference being the RSVB participants along with more sponsored spellers in 2019. The level of words was more difficult based on the decrease in percentage of Verbomania words given in 2021 from 2019 and the increase in the percentage of words that were not in any published Hexco product. The latter indicates that these words had probably not been given in any previous bee. For 30 years, Hexco has analyzed the off-list words given in Regional Bees and in the National Bee. The level of difficulty increased from the early bees to the current ones. Fifteen years ago, we started comparing the word lists to both New Nat's Notes and Verbomania, and in 2008, 52% of the offlist words were in New Nat's Notes and 27% were in Verbomania, accounting for over 75% in just these two products. We also compare the words from the Consolidated Word List (about 25,000 words) to the collective words in New Nat's and Verbomania (about 31,000 words). There are over 12,000 words in our two compilations that are not in CWL, and we omitted a number of their "too easy" words that were not deemed worth studying at the high levels of competition, such as aback, abnormal, abort, carrot, etc. Between our published products and coaching program, we covered nearly 80% of all off-list words.

PERCENTAGE OF THE 302 OFF-LIST WORDS IN HEXCO PRODUCTS

- 74% of the words were in any published Hexco product.
- 44% of the words were in New Nat's Notes (18,000 words).
- 17% of the words were in one of the volumes of Blitz Lists (total 12,000 words).
- 6% of the words were in Verbomania (13,000 words).

SIGNIFICANT STATISTICS

- 87% of the 78 words given for vocabulary in the Preliminary Round 5, Semifinal Round 8 and Final Round 11, were in one of Hexco's published products.
- 82% of the finalists at the National Spelling Bee had Hexco products. (Only 30% of the 210 spellers attending the National Bee had Hexco products.)
- 70% of all words given in the final rounds were in one of Hexco's published products.
- 50% of all 302 words were in either New Nat's Notes (44%) and Verbomania (6%)!

2020 NATIONAL SPELLING BEE

The 2020 National Spelling Bee was cancelled due to COVID. That did not stop Hexco from trying to provide a platform for spellers to show off all their hard work and skill. We teamed up with Kaplan Test Prep and had an online spelling bee, and the 2021 National Spelling Bee winner Zaila Avant-garde and runner-up Chaitra Thummala were respectively first and third in the 2020 Hexco and Kaplan online spelling bee.

2019 NATIONAL SPELLING BEE

This marked the 21 consecutive year of National Spelling Bee champs to use Hexco products.

- 7 of the 8 Octo-champs used Hexco products.
- 94% of finalists had one or more Hexco product.
- 86% of the 710 off-list words given in National Finals were in one of our published products.
- ALL of the words in the final round of the 2019 National Spelling Bee (the year of the 'octochamps') could be found in New Nat's Notes.
