UIL Computer Science Concepts - The First 15 - View Inside!

This guide is written for students preparing to take the Texas University Scholastic League Computer Science written exam. The first 15 questions of each UIL Computer Science written exam are purposely easier than the remaining 25 questions. This guide is intended to show you how to correctly answer the first 15 questions.

A goal of this guide is to help students that are just beginning their computer science studies prepare to be competitive at a basic level. Each correct answer on the Computer Science written exam is worth six points. Each incorrect answer deducts two points from the score. Skipped questions are not penalized. So, if you can answer the first 15 questions correctly, you will earn a score of 90 points. In 2015, a score of 90 would have earned a medal (6th place or better) at the District level 86 percent of the time across all divisions. Not only does 6th place earn a medal for the individual competitor, 6th place earns four points towards the team academic championship for your school.

This guide is written for students preparing to take the Texas UIL Computer Science written exam. The first 15 questions of each UIL Computer Science written exam are purposely easier than the remaining 25 questions. The Hexco guide titled UIL Computer Science – The First 15 covers the topics that make up the first 15 questions on the test. This guide, however, is intended to show you how to correctly answer questions 16 through 40. 

This is a GUIDE, not a textbook. This guide is NOT a complete and exhaustive discussion of the topics presented. Reading and understanding this guide is NOT intended as a course in computer science. Using this guide along with enrollment in a good Computer Science course will enhance your success without a doubt. The more you seek out and use alternative resources that are available, the more successful you will become. 

UIL Computer Science - Hands on Element - View Inside!

There are two goals for this guide. The first goal is to get teams prepared to participate. That is, how to show up at a contest with the proper equipment and software and to provide a basic knowledge of how the contest will be run as well as what to expect and how to deal with it. The second goal is to provide teams with enough programming examples to successfully code the easier two or three problems in the problem set.

While it may not seem to be very competitive to solve only two or three problems in a twelve-problem set, consider the statistics presented in this table from 2015 UIL Computer Science district contests.

Given that one half of a team’s score comes from the top three individual scores on the written portion of the test and that each of those scores could be as high as 240 points, it becomes very clear that successfully completing just a few of the programs can lead to great success at the district level.

Of course, to be competitive at the Region and State level, teams will have to score many more than 270 points. We will leave that level of expertise for another guide. This guide is all about getting off to a good start.

Success in the UIL Computer Science competition requires a great deal of hard work and dedication! To be successful, you will have to practice A LOT! To be successful, you and your teammates will have to memorize A LOT! But, if you will read and study this guide, memorize what you are asked to memorize, practice often, and make use of all of the resources available to you, you can learn a lot and maybe win a few medals along the way.
