Grades 4-6: UIL A+ Oral Reading contestants must read poetry selections of their choice. It may be a singular poem, an excerpt of a poem, or combinations of poetry.
Grades 7-9: UIL A+ Oral Reading contestants must read published prose or poetry selections of their choice, according to the UIL Oral Reading Schedule pertaining to that year. Contestants may use one selection of poetry or prose, an excerpt of a selection, or a combination of selections. Maximum presentation time is six minutes.
This contest relies on speaking, performance, and creativity. Practice in oral reading is critical to not only success in competition, but it also helps develop skills that are extremely valuable in the professional world and will serve students for a lifetime.
